Tamil new year and Vishu

The ‘Varuda Pirappu’ or ‘Vishu’ celebrated in Tamil Nadu and Kerala respectively, symbolizes the arrival of the new year, where each family member dresses elegantly in new clothes. It is that period of the year when the female members of the household retrieve their treasured silk sarees and put them on to enjoy the festivities with their loved ones.

The festival calls for women to adorn themselves in bright and colorful silk sarees that are intricately woven with zari work and buttas. These sarees are available in a range of vibrant hues and are typically complemented with elegant traditional jewelry like jhumkas and a long chain with a thick pendant. Women take special care in selecting the right combination of saree and jewelry to showcase their elegance and grace on this auspicious occasion. The unique designs and patterns on these sarees are a reflection of the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the region.

Vishu, a festival celebrated with zeal and vigor in Kerala, India, is eagerly anticipated as the festival signals the start of a new year for Malayalis and is a time to exchange presents and adorn homes. The customary clothing of the locals is one of the most essential aspects of the Vishu celebration. On this festival in Kerala, women adorn themselves in a gorgeous saree.

The Kerala saree usually features a white hue and is accentuated with a broad or slim gold border, which is offset by a vibrant blouse. Nowadays, Kerala sarees may also include borders in other hues or a brocade pattern. Another attraction of donning the Kerala saree is the opportunity to experiment with various blouse shades and designs.

It is customary to adorn the hair with fresh flowers when wearing this attire, either by tying them into a bun or using a claw-clip to leave them loose in the center. The outfit is complemented with either a choker or a lengthy antique chain, along with gold jhumkas.
